On numerous occasions, things do not go as planned and expected. No matter how hard we try to make everything perfect, we just have to come to terms with the fact that obstacles and even minor hurdles are, sadly, part of life. But hey, always remember that moving forward and being happy is part of life too! So what to do when things go wrong? Surely don’t just sit there and mope, because there is always something you can do!
Know your alternatives
When things go wrong, be aware of your alternatives. When Plan A doesn’t work out well, then at least you have a Plan B or a Plan C, and so on. Having matters go the other way is unfortunate, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that we can’t do anything about it. Maybe our first option is not meant to happen because we are set out to have something better.
Know that you always have a choice
When things go south, we always have a choice to react reasonably, try out other alternatives, and move forward. Although setbacks may be part of life, it doesn’t mean that we always have to get used to it and tolerate it all the time. Humans are blessed with the freedom of choice, so let’s use it rationally.
But, know when to accept
Of course, there are times when even Plan Z might not work out. This time, maybe it is better to accept in order for you to move forward. Remember that if it’s meant to be, the universe will somehow make it happen. And if it’s not, then do yourself a big favor and just focus your attention on far better things.
Acceptance may also involve adjustments. Ask yourself if maybe you’re aiming too much or expecting the unworkable or impossible. Evaluate your goals, and try to adjust them for now. Sooner or later, when circumstances change, by all means, reach for the stars!
Use it as an avenue to improve and grow
When things go wrong, try to look back and assess the possible causes of such a quandary. Breathe, and think of ways on how it could have been better. Bear in mind that there’s no such thing as losing — just learning. Try to analyze the situation and see what you can change and develop, and make it an opportunity to grow and become wiser and stronger.
Relax and take a breath
Sometimes, all you need is a breather. Instead of sulking in the sadness of your misadventure, focus your attention on the good times and be happy. Don’t get me wrong, though. Some problems still need to be dealt with, but take it easy. Take a breath, relax, and see what you can do to make it better. Don’t let these mishaps ruin your day nor cloud your judgment. Brooding about it may prevent you from proceeding and moving forward, so it’s very important to allow yourself to take time to breathe and tell yourself that everything will be alright.
It’s okay to ask for help!
When things go wrong, it’s okay to ask for help and advice from your family, friends, mentors, and experts. Sometimes, achieving something is easier and much bearable knowing that you are supported, guided, and encouraged. No, asking for help is not a sign of weakness. Asking for help can actually help you improve and can give you more courage, more confidence.
When things don’t go the way you want it, remember that it is not the end of the world. We just discussed a few of them, and the list certainly goes on. Let me ask you — what are your positive coping mechanisms? I would love to hear your stories!
